Club 299 - Wed March 21 A.C.T. locals and Resist Records recruits 4 Dead open the night in a super energetic, down-tuned frenzy which is equal parts heavy, sweaty and raw. Powering through faltering vocals, their set traverses a variety of challenging terrain, with minimal repeat. Their unpredictable mix of thrash, grind and doom set the scene perfectly for such a night of genre-defying hardcore.
The Gold Coast’s A Secret Death open in a sweet singing melody that would benefit greatly from a prior sound check. Their sound improves progressively as melody gives way to metal-friendly hardcore, dynamically combined in thrashy, rhythmic and atmospheric movements. After sixteen years of cross-genre pioneering, Converge arrive to unify Brisbane’s disparate scenes of punk, hardcore and metal on their first and long awaited Australian tour. Singer Jacob Bannon, both a walking canvas and a walking example of the positivity synonymous with the Boston outfit’s music, roars through an intricate, speedy and brutal selection of tracks primarily drawn from their latest releases No Heroes, You Fail Me, and the breakthrough Jane Doe. Attempting to finish on the well-known Concubine, they’re called back for an encore, where Bannon denounces genre delineations, sending the scary looking crowd into the unsuspecting mall armed to the teeth – with smiles.
