Vikki Grant & The Platform PDF Print E-mail

ImageDedicated local singer-songwriter VIKKI GRANT is behind a new series of emerging musician nights to be held at the Pavilion in West End. Entitled PLATFORM, the nights will have a particular focus on giving new female talent a performance boost. RAVE investigates the program further…

While Brisbane has an active community of female musicians and performers, it does still tend to be male-dominated in terms of participation. How much of Platform is about inspiring new female talent?

There are plenty of jam nights and live music venues in Brisbane, but to find one that actually has a female performing is a challenge at the best of times. Brisbane is rich with musical talent and the concept for this night was originally spawned from wanting to provide a venue for women to show off their talents and be taken seriously as a performer.  Platform is not specifically open to women, as we realize that any up-and-coming artist goes through the same struggles to be heard. However, in May, we have planned for an all girl rock review. This event is not just a one-off night, but will also be covered by a new local music TV show, helping to expose performers to a wider audience. Demos are being accepted now, and Platform will also be used as an audition tool for future events.

How important is it in Brisbane for programs like Platform to assist emerging artists?

These days people seem to be seeking ‘the next new artist’. To have an event like Platform to provide such a boost for performers is invaluable. Not only is it an incredible opportunity for artists to get their music out to the general public and musical peers, it’s a rare opportunity to be able to play original music.

What has the response from musicians been like to the announcement of Platform?

The response has been really positive. People have been jumping at the chance to become involved, and we have been inundated by artists keen to be a part is this event – from the Sunshine Coast, Tasmania, and all over Brisbane.

Tell us a few details about some of the Industry Nights you have planned.

They’ll occur throughout the year with an emphasis towards the female performer.  We will have female presenters sharing their knowledge and experience of the business with fellow artists. Amongst the list of guests will be band managers, publicists, radio personnel and representatives from the labels. It intends to give performers a heads up on how to get ahead and get heard amongst a sea of voices.

West End is seeing a gradual resurgence of live music options – do you see Platform as part of a shift away from the centralisation of live music venues in the Valley?

Brisbane has such a Valley focus for music. We would love the West End to become and entertainment precinct, and we will be working hard this year to bring about more live entertainment projects, and provide as much support to local artists as possible.

How does an interested performer/band become involved in a Platform show?

Call Vikki on 0403 277 278, or email .  Remember, live music always needs people to listen to the music, so just get down to The Pavilion.

Platform, hosted by Vikki Grant, begins this Thursday March 29 at the Pavilion, West End, from 8pm (free entry). It continues the last Thursday of every month, and new musicians are urged to contact Vikki or the venue to get involved. Turn up with your instrument/s and play!
