“The Nation Blue mount the horses of apocalypse with their third album, Protest Songs, and march forth to destroy themselves and at some point, music as we know it.” Let me first state that the cataclysm of modern music is not contained on this record, though I looked for it everywhere. What I did find was an album of mature and thoughtful hard rock and punk. The band are probably best known for their wild and aggressive playing style, not to mention their cracking live show. Protest Songs doesn't lack for energy, but the band have evolved to encompass quieter moments, as well as more intricate songwriting. Once you get past all of the distorted guitar, pounding drums and throbbing bass, there are some rather tight pop structures holding everything together. This album isn't going to destroy music as we know it, but it it's a nice progression from a band who were already really good at what they do. JAKEB SMITH
