BYRON NAMENYI, singer with hardcore band THIRD STRIKE, talks about ending the band on a high and thanking those who have supported them over the last five years.
MJ: Why are you calling it quits?
BYRON NAMENYI: We are disbanding as Third Strike because we feel that it’s been too long since Tempest and then releasing a new album, mainly due to the fact that I moved 1000 kilometres away. We all had other ventures that fell into first priority when TS slowed down. We all know that some bands have a couple of years between releases but don’t break up, but we thought that it was better to burn out while still somewhat making an impact rather than continue and die without momentum.
MJ: What can long-term fans of the band expect from these last handful of dates?
BN: What we have always brought to the table, pure raw energy with an intensity that will leave you yearning for more after every song.
MJ: Do you have any highlights from your time together as a group?
BN: Where do we start! Over the five years together we’ve had the honour of making best friends from people we hardly know, playing with bands that we have looked up to before TS was even thought of, seen coastal and outback Australia and made people aware of important issues, socially and personally.
MJ: Backtrack Iron Mind Shackles and Survival are also on the bill – is common ground shared between the bands?
BN: Well we have never met or played with Backtrack, we know most of the guys in Iron Mind and Sam (Iron Mind’s vocalist) designed one of our first ever run of shirts. The guys in Shackles and Survival are some of our best mates, they’ve either played in TS before or have been there supporting us from the start, before joining aforementioned bands. There’s a certain close common ground that we all share and that’s our passion for the scene that we stand by.
MJ: Are any of you moving onto new musical projects? If so what?
BN: Yeah all of us are. Elmze our guitarist now sings in Survival, Simmo our other guitarist sings in Deadlift, Jake our drummer is drumming in Deceiver, Chris our bassist plays in Against and I’ll be singing in a new band with all of the guys from TS.
Backtrack and Iron Mind play with THIRD STRIKE at Byron’s YAC on Wednesday Jan 25 (with Shackels and Survival) and Mt Gravatt PCYC on Friday Jan 27 (with Thick Skin and Strength Through Purity). Both shows are all ages. Check out Facebook for more.
