Local melodic rock done well
I keep confusing Hawkmoon with Hawkwind, the British space rock group with a predisposition to shamanistic live performances. Hawkmoon are actually a local four-piece melodic rock band with a fondness for nuanced guitar riffs and emotive lyricism, who trace their musical lineage to the heyday of the ‘90s, claiming influences like Pearl Jam, You Am I and Powderfinger. On their self-titled debut EP, it’s the latter influence that clearly shines through, with songs like opener Speed Of The Dark reminiscent of Powderfinger circa Double Allergic. There is a certain convincing quality about Hawkmoon’s debut. Untrained Eye is a winding and mellow anthem, whereas Always Ends The Same is fairly solid ballad number with the requisite dose of melodrama. These songs are fine, but cannot compete with the record’s real gem, Silverline, an up-tempo power-pop number with great little hooky guitar melody. Here, vocalist Pat Hehir sounds a lot like Jon Auer of legendary power-pop group The Posies. Quietly confident, Hawkmoon demonstrate all the hallmarks of solid rock group.
