(Bang!)
Good instruments, downbeat sound on this slow-moving release Love In A Cold Place is an often-melancholy album. It moves at an unhurried pace, allowing for the instrumentation to develop. The slow violin, piano, guitar and organ coupled with the sad, reminiscent lyrics make the songs sound like stories about a bygone era. There’s some interesting piano work, especially when coupled with the violin, such as on Where Is The Love? However, singer Justin Cusack’s voice feels a tad too downbeat, almost sounding a little forced. Instrumental track Nocturne is violin with basic drumming to back it. This song is rather repetitive and, although it only runs for one minute fifty, becomes quite tedious. Laura, another instrumental song, starts off slow and gradually builds until noisy guitars explode. Distinctive instrumental moments like this make it worthwhile listening to, however the overall downcast, dreary feel makes you crave some fast, upbeat music to immediately counteract it.
