European nu metal? Oh dear…

I’ve encountered these guys before within the glittering confines of Nuclear Blast’s magnificent Monsters of Metal DVD series. I wasn’t too keen on their European take on nu metal then, and despite some pretty cool guitar solos here and there and a slightly more spacious production than is usual for this kind of band, I must say I do not like it now. For those folks out there still clutching their Sepultura – Roots CD close to their chest, still keeping their Korn shirts close at hand and still going to Disturbed and Static-X concerts, Ektomorf produce a reasonably skewered take on the genre. Little takes like the addition of sitars into the intro of Ambush in the Night, and the reasonably kick arse System of a Down-style riffing that follows saves this album from being an absolute dog, but aural abominations like the ‘jump da fuck up’ fest that is fifth track I’m Against do their best to drag Outcast back again. There is probably a fair bit here to interest fans of the genre, but any other serious metal fan (or rock music fan for that matter) is going to have to work hard to hold back the puke with this one. Maybe it’s an outcast for a reason…
