Catch this disease and you won’t be sorry! With a mighty gap left in the Australian hardcore scene with the recent break-up of undisputed heavyweights I Killed the Prom Queen and the American/European adoption of Parkway Drive, someone needs to step up to the plate and take on the title. With the release of High Hopes, Brisbane’s own Amity Affliction have set themselves up as serious contenders for this place. Taking a more emotive approach to the genre, these local lads have exceeded expectations with their blend of international quality metal-core and post-hardcore. Filling out their sound since the release of their last EP with keyboards, adding both atmosphere and extra melody, and displaying an obviously growing maturity in both songwriting and vocal skills, these factors have made all the difference to the overall professionalism of this release. With the catchiness and melodic vocals of Alexisonfire, the euro-metal stylings of Still Remains and a dash of contained brutality a la Underoath, High Hopes is an impressively executed step towards the top.
