Seriously, when are the doors EVER open at six o’clock? I arrive at the Arena in time for the last two songs from popular local openers The Paper & The Plane, immediately upset that I missed it but inspired enough to grab a copy of the An Introduction EP. If you don’t have it, get it. It’s awesome.
Not only are tonight’s second act A Static Lullaby from the same place as Ryan Atwood, but they’re equally as brutal (somewhere between post-correctional system Ryan and quirky, assimilated-into-Seth’s-witty-conversational tone Ryan). Playing the best from their latest, self-titled effort, including post-hardcore pearler Hang ‘Em High and crowd favourite The Shooting Star Destroyed Us All, the boys’ set falls upon the relatively deaf ears of a largely disinterested crowd. When Saosin finally take the stage to the sound of a live-spoken intro from one of the band members, the crowd comes out of their collective shell. Opening with a short selection from their debut, the Newport Beach locals (yep, it reinforces the aforementioned metaphor) are sonically unbelievable live. Led by flawless vocal melodies, the quality of Saosin’s performance is matched by a refreshing humility that defies the strangely out of context dance pit (yes, you with the mohawk). Crowd favourite Seven Years harshly sung by vocalist Cove Reber was the standout, along with Voices and Follow & Feel. CHRIS DRIVER
