The Zoo - Wednesday May 16

Tonight being a free Triple J-sponsored event ensures there is a line bigger than an organised religion outside The Zoo when I arrive. Call me biased towards Brisbane music, but Mary Trembles are easily the highlight of tonight's proceedings. Their sound seems to be getting so much bigger each time I see them and their stage presence tonight is nothing short of brilliant. Front man Skritch paces the stage pulling out riff after riff of droning indie-swamp rock and the crowd, eager to jump around, lap it up. They definitely turn heads tonight and I hope this manages to expand their profile even more.

In a what is a nice change, hardly any time passes between Mary Trembles exiting and kids of the 'now' Operator Please entering The Zoo's sweaty, hot stage. They waste no time at all and rip into tracks off their upcoming album which I have the distinct feeling may be quite popular given the amount of kids shimmying their way around the venue. They pull out radio-flogged single Crash Tragic pretty early in the piece to a raucous reception, inspiring one rather drunk girl in front of me to remove her shoes and do some of the best twisting I've ever seen. They deliver a super-sweet brand of spit-polished, shiny pop and while it's not my cup of tea, they are definitely a band of surprisingly tight musicians worthy of respect.

I am extremely eager to see The Cops perform tonight as their latest album Drop it in Their Laps is quite an impressive record. However, I confess myself slightly disappointed – although their show is tight, they seem to lack energy. The sound is a bit rough at the start but improves quickly; however it's not enough to ameliorate the overall performance. There are shining moments though, and the delivery of their single Call Me Anytime shows a band that is very capable of writing fantastic pop songs. I'll definitely endeavour to catch them on their next visit.
