(Dance To The Radio / V2)
Everything’s better in Leeds When your band has the stamp of approval thrown down to you by fellow Leeds scallywags Kaiser Chiefs, you know you’re getting somewhere, right? It’d be interesting to know then, what pop-rocking quintet The Pigeon Detectives truly think of the complement considering their debut album, Wait For Me, blows the ‘Chiefs second round efforts out of the water. And in the great tradition of ace debut albums, The Pigeon Detectives have gone for broke and held little back. For underneath catchy hook after catchy hook on the dancey retro-rock of I’m Not Sorry, radio single Romantic Type and I Found Out, complete the intro from the Sex Pistols’ Anarchy In The UK, Wait For Me reads much like excerpts from a diary about the best days and nights of your life. At the very least, the nights you get drunk, fall out with a lover and then get laid later that night with a person you’ll never see or could ever expect to have again. One of the few albums released this year that’s enjoyable from start to finish, the band polish their ‘70s punk influences to great effect including lashings of melody and harmonies on the good natured guitar-led pop-rock that’s the main stay of the album. If The Fratellis’ doa-do-do’s shit you to tears and Jet’s rock posturing is wearing thin, The Pigeon Detectives will restore your faith in retro. ***½ JACK LANGRIDGE
