Simplicity, catchiness, and a love of the surf This band was inspired by a love of the surf, and as such their name, and even album artwork fits in with this passion. But if you were to pick up this album thinking it was a laid back, smooth release to listen to whilst watching the waves roll past, you’d be mistaken. It’s a loud, energetic, fast paced rock release. Calling Mercury, the final song here, uses the ol’ soft then loud trick, to its advantage. The first five songs are all short, fast and loud, and they stick in the head. Each track follows a very simple, traditional rock formula; there’s nothing remotely complex about the sound. The similarity of each song’s sound brings with it a sense of déjà vu, as one song ends and the next begins. However, the very nature of its simplicity and catchiness will win just as many fans – if not more – than it will lose out on. KATH POLLOCK
