JAKEB SMITH plays some email beach volleyball with the four-man team of THE BAWDIES.
Emerging gracefully from the Tokyo rock & roll scene circa 2006, the Bawdies are currently touring the east coast of Australia supporting The Basics and promoting I Beg You, their release on Toshi ‘Mach Pelican’ Maeda’s Bop Records. These happy-go-lucky young gents mix the signature sounds of ‘50s-era rock, Merseybeat and rockabilly into a perfect package of danceable and energetic music. Let’s meet the Bawdies shall we?
Roy (Vocal & Bass) Birthday: 1983.07.16; Blood Type: O; Favourite Artist: Ray Charles / Little Richard / Otis Redding Taxman (Guitar) Birthday: 1983.11.21; Blood Type: A; Favourite Artist: The Beatles / Buddy Holly Jim (Guitar) Birthday: 1983.05.26; Blood Type: A; Favourite Artist: The Rolling Stones / Chuck Berry Marcy (Drums) Birthday: 1983.11.08; Blood Type: A; Favourite Artist: The Beatles / Jerry Lee Lewis 1. What does rock & roll have that other music styles don't? Its essential style never changes authenticity. 2. How do the Bawdies get all the young boys and girls dancing? We believe rock & roll is music for dancing. It’s just natural that the audience enjoys dancing to it, to the rhythm. 3. What is the secret to writing short and catchy songs? The secret is that we wholly enjoy creating songs. 4. Why do you have all of your blood types listed on your website? In case of emergency? It’s popular in Japan to distinguish people’s characters by their blood type. So, when they introduce artists and actors, in magazines for young readers especially, they give that information to satisfy their curiosity. 5. Do you guys dress very well. What role does fashion and hair play in rock & roll? Do you look good wherever you go? We try to dress and look right whenever and wherever we are. Dressing in rock & roll style gives people the atmosphere, gives them the ‘60s feeling. Rock & roll fashion matches the music and lyrics and draws people into the “world” of rock & roll. 6. How do you find your ‘50s/‘60s style fits into all of the other genres on Japanese radio? We find our music fits in very well. We feel it’s an important part of a valuable diversity. 7. Are you part of a scene in Tokyo where everyone plays a similar style of retro music? Or is it more diverse, with bands from different genres playing together? Well, in a way, but there’s real diversity. And different genres can, do, appear together. 8. Considering how very sharp and responsible you guys look. Do you still go wild after a show? Booze, babes, fast cars etc? Not too wild. We enjoy ourselves to our hearts’ content. But we know there are rules, and that the big one is that nobody gets hurt. The Bawdies play Thursday June 21 at the Troubadour, supporting The Basics. I Beg You is out now through Bop Records.
