(Independent) You may have heard this one before… The cover of this EP screams (or maybe ponders) pseudo-melancholy. Matt Williams stares pointedly off-camera, hopefully, if only to satisfy my desire for the tired old cliché, at something in the mid-distance. The music reflects the cover, sitting somewhere between familiar and overdone, sounding like you’ve heard every song before and not in way that makes you warm and snuggle-y. Solo singer-songwriter Williams mixed and produced each track himself and should be commended for the clean sound of the release. However, when trying to make a name for yourself in an already over-populated genre, it helps if you avoid predictability. Most of the songs just take you from A to B, and at the end, you don’t really remember how you got there. Closing track A Throw Of Your Dice is a nice enough finisher, but certainly doesn’t save the album from being unremarkable. And seeing as he knows his way around a mixer, he certainly could have done something a little more off the beaten track. SEBASTIAN HAYES
