Another entry into a saturated genre…

If you’re a male, Australian singer-songwriter with an acoustic guitar and a tale to tell, you’re pushing into a crowded room. It seems that the genre has exploded in the last couple of years with Fannings, Hanlons, Pykes, and Liors springing up like cabbage patch kids. Athron is one of these Australian singer-songwriters, but unfortunately this record does little to push him ahead of his contemporaries. Taming Butterflies offers a perfectly pleasant set of songs that are consistently decent, but never outstanding. Those with a particular enjoyment of acoustic ballads will certainly find a lot to like here, but for everyone else there isn’t much to latch onto. The record is laidback and melancholy, and does have some nice moments but these sparks of interest are too few and far between. In addition, the seventeen tracks offered are simply too much to swallow when the taste is always the same.
