The Zoo Fri May 26 Dappled Cities Fly are a strange entity. Something about vocalist Tim Derricourt reminds me of those kids from high school that are really into theatre and musicals, and they’re just a little bit crazy but you’re not sure if they’re putting it on or they really are a tad mental. He shares lead vocal duties with Dave Rennick, and their set features mostly songs from debut album A Smile, including personal favourite Cream. They’re not at their best tonight, and where on previous occasions I have found their strange melodies and falsetto vocals to be endearing, unfortunately this time the mix is not quite right and they seem to be trying too hard to impress the crowd.
Gerling, on the other hand, are old pros. Anyone who has ever been to a festival has probably stumbled across them at some stage, and it’s always been my belief that they are one of the better live bands in Australia. Their set tonight is one of the best that I’ve seen, and the packed out Zoo is buzzing with energy. Darren and Burke, as always sharing vocals, get the crowd moving from the start with favourites Blood on the Microphone and Get Activated. The Zoo seriously resembles a rave – crazy dancing, hands in the air, sweet drum and bass… It still strikes me as strange that these are the guys who gave us Death to the Apple Gerls. So it’s great to see how far they’ve come, and the songs from new album GERLING 4 sound fresh and inventive. The end of the set features old faves G-House Project, Who’s Your Daddy and Ghost Patrol, and when Bourke makes mention of the gig being one of their best, it’s a pretty fair indication that they rocked the house tonight.
