Damnit, not another indie prodigy! Boddicker is the sort of kid that everyone hates to love. He’s that guy you know that is all smart and clever and talented, but it just pisses you off because it makes you look bad. After releasing a 22 track demo that was picked up by one Isaac Brock, Boddicker set about putting this record together, a swirl of beautifully arranged indie rock that will no doubt make Conor Oberst upset. The songs are built around Boddicker’s whimsical ballads, then given the distinct markings of producer Brian Decker (Modest Mouse). The slow burn of First We Store Up is akin to a bizarre carnival, while Pretty Baby (Part One) possesses a tremendous balance between traditional instrumentation and electronic manipulation. Boddicker’s sound possesses a particular elegance, his songwriting is sound and his voice carries an enthusiasm belied by his Mississippi accent. One of those records that is just simply good.
