(Barsuk/Shock)
Doo doo, dee doo doo indeed With the follow up to the exciting I Am The Fun Blame Monster comes another album full of ideas. Menomena’s unorthodox rock brings to mind a more open and relaxed TV On The Radio. The combined vocal duties of the three-piece are howled, yelped and moaned, bruising drums and twisting guitar forming the foundations, then laced with poisonous lyrics. It’s as if each track leapt from a different cliff and found something strange and beautiful at the bottom. Opener Muscle ‘N Flo demands attention with crashing drums segueing into Flaming Lips quirk-pop territory, before veering into The Pelican, the incensed vocals combining with a repeated bluesy twang to create a deliciously acidic stomper. Killer Bee weaves rock instinct through a superb clash of xylophones, horns and piano that writhes and builds into a crystalline apex. Every element does its job beautifully. This is a tasty slab of experimental rock done right. MICHAEL PINCOTT
