Victorian indie/celtic/punk group The Go Set are manning the merchandise stand and mingling with the already substantial crowd when Doubting Thomas kick off. Vocalist and guitarist Daniel Grant swings between acoustic and electric guitars while the bassist pulls off some charismatic lines under the classic rock guitar delivered by the lead guitarist. The band are in tune with one another and the crowd lap it up.
Mick Thomas is up next. This is the pivotal moment of the night. The crowd momentarily swells and the drunken glow of the fans is evident. Thomas is an old hat at this, and stands on stage under a lone spotlight. Each song sees a new musician step up until, as the set draws to a close, the stage is packed. When the drummer arrives the crowd swoons and the last songs complete an entertaining and nostalgic set. When The Go Set finally walk out the boys are obviously enthused - it's also the first time I have ever seen bagpipes played by a grungey alternative-rock kid. Vocalist Justin Keenan is cute and outspoken. The quirky straight-boy Aussie folk/punk style of The Go Set is well received. ILI TULLOCH
