Brit avant-rockers compile collection of B-sides and rarities Clinic are known for their often otherworldly blend of ‘60s beat pop, primitive R&B, weird folk and droning avant-rock. Conceivably, a collection of B-sides and rarities from this mob could be a rather challenging listen, as their ‘conventional’ albums are certainly odd enough. What’s surprising is how consistently compelling and listenable these tunes are. True, those unaccustomed to the eccentric, often unsettling world of Clinic may have some adjusting to do. The fevered vocals and stabbing rowdy guitars frequently resemble a nightmare’s interpretation of ‘60s rock & roll, or maverick indie experimentation filtered through pagan folk music. But once you become accustomed to their idiosyncrasies, you may actually find yourself being seduced by Clinic’s skewed vision. That’s what’s rare and distinctive about Funf – it’s a B-sides compilation that could actually work as a suitable introduction to this strange and daringly entertaining band. Clinic have achieved something considerable, in releasing a collection of supposed supporting tracks that is actually a fine album in its own right. **** MATT THROWER
