(1AM Records) Comin’ up singing These devastatingly cool Melbourne cats are due to release their 3rd album this august. This gold listening nugget is a mere three tracks long but worth a listen for any fan of avant-garde pop, jazz or blues. The band employs clapping and whistling as a stand-in rhythm section and openly refuse to play loud or with a 4/4 rhythm, and this has to be one of their best characteristics. Blue’s constant and persistent sway would be jolted by 4/4, taking away from the haunting mystery it exudes. The song Falling is reminiscent of The Cowboy Junkies or Mazzy Star but sung by a male vocalist, namely Andrew McCubbin in his often half whispered incantations. The lyrics on the title track Blue are cute and sweet and the pop structure of the song doesn’t prevent the bands complexity from peaking through. I will be watching for a tour date in Brisbane.
