The Troubadour - Sun 19 August The mood is mellow, relaxed and friendly at The Troubadour this Sunday. Let’s Not But Say We Did are up first, and vocalist/guitarist Nick’s cute awkward honesty wins our hearts. The violin and cello balance harmoniously with his lyrical style, and the mood seems right for a Sunday. The jazzy slightly mellow rock that To The North employ is more uptempo than the other acts. While each instrument has its own melody, they band seem to need to work a little harder at making it all meld. They do however have good stage presence – the bassist the boppiest thing out tonight. The Paper and The Plane have a clever symmetry seemingly lacking in the previous outfit, and unlike anything else going on. They match flesh tunnels on their seated acoustic guitarists; All That I Had is heart-wrenching. City On Film is Chicago’s Bob Nanna solo on guitar. Playing an intimate show he gushes about kangaroo porn and photos with koalas. He does a cover of Come On Eileen by Dexy’s Midnight Runners and his solo rendition of City On Film song Secret Santa Cruz is suitably relaxed. He is polite and seems to really like his audience. It’s been a short night, but the bands have connected so well I leave feeling like I am saying goodbye to old friends. ILI TULLOCH
