The Jubilee Hotel - Fri 17 Aug Not only do the punk bands playing Carpark Carnage get up on stage (and down; stage diving as punk-rockers be prone to do), but numerous roadies and fans leap upon the platform also – making for some memorable moments. Dementia 13 are energetic and anthemic, the surfie drummer getting his shirt off and going hard through such profundity as B for Buttholes and My Junkie Friend, as the groupies drool down in the front row. A beer-swilling fan perched sideways on the kick drum joins The Black Market – to keep the kit from sliding off the stage. They get the pit started with their muddy noise-punk sound, and slam-dancing ensues. But it is the The Scul Hazzards who stand out and apart from the rest, they’re more ambient and much darker than the other straight punk rock so far. Bassist Tiffany Milne is impressive in ripped tights and short black dress, and holds bass lines that drip all over the crowd. Problems with the sound mean the vocals aren’t nearly loud enough, but guitarist/vocalist Steven Smith has a strong voice and good mic control, so luckily we hear it anyway. Photo: Kylie Keene 150 (ok, official count is ten) musicians get up for ska band Blowhard, including a pineapple (who plays trombone) and a didgeridoo player. It’s an all-star performance, their irrepressible audience grinning. The Disables play their most-loved song ASIO. They’re fun, with both guitarists and bassist singing their hearts out. The crowd swoons for their Johnny Cash cover, which I’m told is often trundled out, going down a hit. By now things are getting messy and Jobson’s Dreamkillers aren’t the ones to calm things down. Fights are breaking out and the bouncers are on patrol. They play the longest set ever and only true fans and the very drunk are still enamoured by the end. But it is worth it to see them bash out Father Can You Help Me. ILI TULLOCH
