She’s a smoking gun To give you an idea of who Corrina Steel is: this Australian songstress was fittingly named after Merle Haggard’s version of song Corrina Corrina. Steel played in a swamp blues band before heading overseas to live in Memphis, then upon returning home she made this album. Steel has the credentials, the crooning effortlessly powerful vocals and the experience to make something like this really work. Her music has been described as a roots, soul, blues and gospel blend. The gospel comes out in track Lord Help The Poor And Needy. Her rendition of John Prine ballad Beautiful World stands out as, well, beautiful. It’s a soulful country song with touching instrumentation. Steel’s penchant for country mixed in with the aforementioned styles is reminiscent of such crossover artists as Gillian Welch. Blues is A Good Woman Gone Bad is solid enough that fans of many different genres will find their taste satiated with this release. ILI TULLOCH
