(Soulmate / Inertia)
Gimmicky Aussie rapper’s debut Boltz wears a bolt around his neck. As gimmicks go, it’s pretty ordinary. He does better distinguishing himself with good music like his office-drinks party track Ooh Yeah! which samples Office Space and Duffman, and Austracism, which is as scathing an indictment of our culture as you’re likely to hear. There’s an odd undercurrent to The Wishlist though, that makes it sound more like a shopping list. There’s a steady stream of product-placing namechecks for Gloria Jean’s, various brands of booze and cigarettes and three songs that mention his Nikés. I need to hear how much a rapper likes his sweatshop sneakers about as much as I need to hear someone else rebutting Nas’s claim that hip hop is dead, and Boltz adds his name to the long list of those who’ve done that, too.
