Image(Epitaph/Shock)

Power pop-punk that has all been heard before

Epitaph signings Farewell show how the seminal label has moved away from its more traditional punk roster. True, Farewell have some punk elements, not least in their rowdy three-minute song structures, but they blend it with the classic stadium pop sounds most notably discovered in the likes of Cheap Trick, as well as the post-Husker Du power trio Sugar. The result is a no-nonsense blend of chunky electric guitars and radio-friendly, two-part harmony choruses.  It’s competent and full of earnest passion but it’s also a bit tinny sounding and nothing that Aussie acts such as Bodyjar can’t do heaps better. A solid, hook-filled effort to be sure, but maah!  I’d rather listen to Copper Blue.

I think this album is amazing, and deserves more than one listen before lumping it into the pop-punk crap pile.

It is WAY smarter than you are giving it credit for.
