Sphere - WonderlandSphere - Sometimes HysteriaDuncan FairbrotherAndrew Grennan

"Sphere Return to Orbit"

In 1997, "Sphere" - an original Brisbane band with electronica/indie tendencies - had just broken into the London music scene with a gig at London's Camden Underworld. With MTV on hand to film the event, this breakthrough gig would unfortunately be their last. The stresses of living a nightmare in London became the band's undoing and several albums' worth of material would sit unreleased. Until now...

Trans:Com has collected Sphere's complete works and made them available for download from iTunes and BigPond Music - "Wonderland" and "Sometimes Hysteria".

"Sphere" were Duncan Fairbrother (keyboards and vocals) and Andrew Grennan (guitars).

"Wonderland" is Sphere's unreleased album from 1997 - 8 tracks of indie / electronica / pop glory, produced by the band and Jeff Lovejoy, and featuring Dave Atkins on drums - fully remastered and available complete for the first time.

"Sometimes Hysteria" collects Sphere's compilation appearances, rare tracks, remixes, and early works. It covers an extraordinary spectrum of influence, including darker neo-synthpop through brit-pop and on via electronica.

Sphere came to TransCom's attention after having seen the band's hand-written poster calling for a 3rd member influenced by New Order and Depeche Mode, Trans:Com commissioned 2 tracks (engineered by Magoo) to appear on its debut Evidence compilation of new local talent. A debut live performance at the CD launch cemented the association. Throughout 1995 and 1996, Sphere gigged extensively to a steadily growing audience. A remix of one of the Evidence tracks was commissioned for the Cyberia techno compilation and proved to be their biggest hit with fans and radio.

During late 1996, the band entered Red Zeds and began work on their debut album. 8 tracks were completed, a promotional sampler was released to media, and the stage was set for the band to follow the path to critical success ultimately realised by the likes of Powderfinger and Regurgitator. In 1997, London's music street press acknowledged Sphere's gig at London's Camden Underworld as the 'gig of the week' - a 4-piece outfit from Brisbane, Australia. The rest as they say...

Sphere's "Wonderland" and "Sometimes Hysteria" are Trans:Com digital releases exclusively through iTunes & BigPond Music. Click the title to check it out on iTunes. These releases are part of the label's mission to represent Brisbane's historic, current and future electronic and alternative music.
