(Independent) So close, yet so excruciatingly far… Like a beautiful soufflé cooked for a dinner party, the debut release from The Neurotransmitters rises steadily until the last moment when it collapses in a heap, surrendering all aesthetics but retaining its inherent flavour. Don’t misunderstand me; the first track Let Me Fly Away, although not the most momentous use of metaphor, is relatable and likely to be a song to get stuck in one’s head. The violin especially adds another level of familiarity and interest. But although this release is filled with strong melodies and often quite catchy tunes, the cheesy lyrics and nasal delivery increasingly fail to impress the further the album progresses. Although the band’s press release describes the lyrics as ‘lean’, some may argue a little beef goes a long way, as the approach leaves little to the imagination, and ultimately cheapens what is otherwise an excellent example of thoughtful Brisbane pop-rock. Written by sheree, on 22-09-2007 18:33 " well obviously you don't really know this band, how much effort and love goes into their music, you must be joking about the beef comment because they bring more then the beef, maybe what you need to is go to one of their gigs or one of their jam sessions and not judge them by their EP, i thought music wasn't supposed to be so critically judged, if people are tallented like these three guys and aren't given a chance to show their tallent then what is the point of having an interest, or a hobby or tallent for that matter, the comments like what you guys have given really makes you guys look bad, but i guess everyone intitled to their own thoughts and feelings about this band, but i swear yours stinks, if only you knew what the band was like live and as they are as people ive never seen such heart and soul in any other band, they really connect " |
2. Written by Jakeb Smith, on 23-09-2007 13:20 The purpose of an EP review is - I thought obviously - to judge a band on their EP. We endeavored, also, to be as objective as possible. Music, I assure you, as in any art, is supposed to be critically judged, otherwise musicians would merely be surrounded by trifling sycophants. What we have presented, and what I edited in Lee's review to stress, is that The Neurotransmitters ARE a great band, but one who's lyricism isn't to the same standard as their music. I consider this valuable feedback for ANY band, even if it's only the [stinky] opinion of one publication. |
