(Independent)

She who has harnessed the power of rock

Local lass Sarah Haigh has unleashed her first release – essentially four pop tracks, but laden with a rawness and punkish energy that makes them something more. Haigh’s voice meshes perfectly with the guitars, possessing the right scope, making them seem like they’re on the same team. Haigh’s sound carries elements of Karen O’s grunge in Yeah Yeah Yeah’s but also Juanita Stein’s grace in the Howling Bells, finding a favourable middle ground between spunk and punk. It’s surprising to find that midway through the title track you’re in a full-blown guitar riff, the intensity of the track really sneaks up on you. Whatever Happened is another ballsy track that builds up through guitar, piano and the rising strength of Haigh’s voice and brings in some subtly incorporated strings at its close. The four tracks on this EP definitely serve as a promising taster of what is to come from Ms. Haigh.
