Somewhat past its best-before, yet still delicious alt-country dish... I was sceptical after the first track on this EP – I was thinking ‘another damn hippie from the Woodford festival destined to be enamoured by Triple J.’ Then, I was pleasantly surprised when the second track, and those that followed, took a slightly more positive turn in the vein of Johnny Cash inspired country/blues rock. Ewing’s voice is able to sit comfortably over both a band or his solo guitar, and has that dark quality of timbre that is really what makes or breaks this kind of music. Basically, this CD demonstrates a very competent, whilst not overly creative, take on the alternative country genre, and succeeds in being a cohesive unit. With any luck, we’ll hear more from Ewing in the near future that will hopefully take this to the next level. RYAN SIM
