(Independent / Keen Music)
Cleared for take off, but fails to reach great heights Production on this Brisbane band’s EP is handled by the very capable Forrester Savell, the man behind acclaimed Aussie hard rock releases – Karnivool, The Butterfly Effect, anyone? Though literally setting the sky as the limit, Sub Inc.’s sound on this release is undefined: the variation between tracks is significant, culminating in a mish-mash of so-called ‘cyber rock’. Prize sounds like an early Linkin Park b-side before breaking into a cool disco-synth bridge; the distorted riffing and funky bass during second track Negative are impressive. The scattered nature of the disc is best demonstrated in the almost un-listenable Paraverse, which is completely incongruous (Substantially Incongruous? – JS) with the rest of their material. It sounds like a half-arsed nu-metal demo and the EP would have been much stronger without it. Though bursting at the seams with interesting ideas, Sub Inc. would do well to focus their slick sound.
