There’s a strange phenomena occurring at the Riverstage tonight. Walking across the Goodwill bridge on my way to the venue, the crisp Brisbane air is filled with the screams of thousands of teenage girls. No, I’m not on my way to a Dean Geyer in store appearance – it’s Fall Out Boy, that pop punk band your 12 year-old cousin loves, and you love to hate. Gyroscope are on when I arrive, and I’ll bet anyone in the band at least $10 they have never had a crowd like this. I’m not sure if it’s because it’s school holidays, or because there’s $5 beers (yes for the grown ups!) but I have never witnessed such mass hysteria. Justified or not, Gyroscope do a good job of warming up the crowd, with JJJ favourite Doctor Doctor and songs from their new album Breed Obsession. It’s the Fall Out Boy show tonight though, and their set draws from both old and new material, as well as a generous sprinkling of cover songs. The screaming girls go into overdrive for enigmatic bassist Pete Wentz, and they know ALL THE FREAKING WORDS. I mean, yes I once knew and still do know all the words to Gangsta’s Paradise but these kids are just amazing. Songs like Dance Dance, Sugar We’re Goin’ Down, and recent hit This Ain’t a Scene demonstrate the band’s innate understanding of melody, but it’s the cover versions that take this stadium show to the next level. Beat It (Michael Jackson), Basket Case (Green Day), the Power of Love (Huey Lewis and the News!) and Akon’s recent hit Don’t Matter all make an appearance. The encore includes the AFL anthem Thnks Fr Th Mmrs, and it’s by this stage I’m feeling pretty guilty about actually having a good time. The power of pop punk – set to change the world. Lolz. They are they best live band at the moment and it seemed most of the crowd were there to see them. The "gyro mosh" is at every gig they play and fully justified! It's fantastic that an aussie band totally upstaged the headline act.. jack's mannequin did as well. The fact that fall out boy's best songs were covers says it all - they were very disappointing indeed. |
2. Written by Dave, on 18-02-2008 15:51 Yeah, I agree wholeheartedly with the leigh. Gyroscope are the bomb, and the home-made tee-shirts proclaiming "i'm only here for gyroscope" showed how much the real music fans wanted to distance themselves from the rubbish that is fall out boy. Pete Wentz did get the 'most amusing moment' award though... when a crowd member threw a full bottle of water at him, which subsequently slammed into wentz feminine face. excellent work. Here's my advice to FOB: sack your manager. When your manager hires support acts that are way out of your league, people see you for the pathetic excuse for mass marketing that you are. Peace. |
