The Zoo - Sat Oct 6 The alternating line-up of the Elefant Traks triple-header results in Hermitude hitting the decks first and filling The Zoo with their massive soundscapes. The Blue Mountains duo deliver an engaging performance of their unique blend of drum & bass, dub and reggae. Luke Dubs and Elgusto occasionally dabble with live keys and drums as they offer live interpretations of tracks from new EP Rare Sightings, which sold out last night on the tour’s first show.
Talented MC The Tongue released his debut album Shock And Awe last week and it’s clear to see why Elefant Traks were so keen to sign the youngster. His stage presence, lyrical flow and songwriting talent are considerable: backed by NSW DMC champion DJ Skoob, The Tongue runs through tight tracks from the album and first EP Bad Education. His first single The Punch still packs a you-know-what, while newie Real Thing is a cruise-y, brass-filled feel-good number. Tonight’s headliner Urthboy makes me wonder how either of the two previous acts could have satisfactorily closed the night. It’s difficult to pick highlights from a set that retains its intensity for over an hour. Fellow Elefants come and go throughout; longtime partner in crime Ozi Batla is by Urthy’s side for the duration. Batla’s presence onstage is much appreciated: indeed, it’s hard to imagine separating the two Herd MCs. Cuts from Urthboy’s brilliant second album The Signal flow thick and fast: the title track and first single We Get Around achieve a huge response from the sold out crowd, while Ozi Batla amusingly dedicates an excellent version of Hermitude track Fallen Giants to Joey Johns. Brisbane’s Three Strikes show concludes with a collaborative performance of a new, untitled track featuring all of tonight’s artists; it’s a damn catchy number that adequately represents the hip hop family that is Elefant Traks.
