The Tivoli Sat June 17 With an extra early 8pm start, The Vasco Era bring bluesy pop-rock to a fairly hollow Tivoli, but numbers grow as many people arrive specifically see The Drones’ staggering set. The buzz around these four performers, led by the intense Gareth Liddiard, is completely justified as they prove that new rock music can still excite and astonish. You Am I are always dependable for a good show, but it’s shows like tonight’s that explain why they are still revered as something special.
The band airs most of the new Convicts record, with opener Thuggery, garage-soul winner Constance George, and crowd favourite It Ain’t Funny How We Don’t Talk Any More definite future set staples. All four members appear at their peak, Davey Lane’s backing vocals at a confident new high, and Andy Kent and Rusty Hopkinson’s rhythm section tight, and visibly fun. Timmy Rogers, smartarse extrodinaire, is in brilliant form, soloing on a couple of Hi Fi Way numbers, and inviting an elated crowd member to guest duet on Berlin Chair. He excels, congratulations mystery sir. There is a sadness behind Tim’s sheen, as he reveals that the gal of early song Jaimme’s Got A Gal has died recently. However, a smattering of oldies like Cathy’s Clown, Baby Clothes and Rumble leaves the throng no choice but to jump, dance and sweat, and when Tim closes the gig by ditching his guitar to go all Iggy on the intense new 90-second scorcher Thank God I’ve Hit The Bottom, I find my new favourite live track and lose my shit. Honestly, sound as ever? You fucking bet. SIMON TOPPER
