Punxie, Matt Poison, Brad Cox, Budgie, Steve Cyanide

Who is Punxie's band, anyway?

So much attention has been focused on anarchist comedian and MySpace punk rock phenomenon Punxie, that it is only now as their debut performances loom close that attention has turned to some strangely familiar faces in the rest of Punxie & The Poison Pens.

Opening the most eyes with his return on the music scene is Poison Pens bass player Budge (or Gary Page) who would be remembered most from his time in La Fetts, an Ipswich band from the Pig City era that had their song "SEQEB Scabs" immortalised by being seized from the 4ZZZ library under Sir Jo's period of power (and which is featured on the Behind The Banana Curtain CD available from 4ZzZFM).

Brad Cox, The Poison Pens drummer, also comes from popular and some would say pivotal underground Ipswich bands of the Bjelke-Peterson era including The Upsets, The Dumbshow and The Skeletones to name just a few.

Matt Poison, lead guitarist, musical genius and composer of The Poison Pens songs began as a musician in the 1980’s in Brisbane bands like Scruff The Cat and The Bystanders.

With such a combination of talents, it isn't surprising that Punxie & The Poison Pens has created such a stir even before their eagerly anticipated debut on the live scene.

The band has recently created controversy by announcing plans to allow audience members to participate in torturing voodoo dolls of Australian Idol judges, and earlier releasing an internet version of their song, “My Pussy Is The Bomb”.

"At first I think a lot of people were shocked at our music, but Brisbane and SE Queensland has a long tradition of satirical, innovative, politically active rock songs, and a lot of the bands that performed or released their songs were censored, or criticised for being offensive, too," says Punxie.

"I think being hated for our opinions by some of the people and groups that our fans also dislike doesn't hurt us at all," laughs Punxie.

"It's not like Mark Holden or, say, Tony Abbott are planning on doing me any favours anyway!"

Their debut performances supporting UK legends Anti-Nowhere League start November 21,22, and 23rd but you can catch a free sneak preview at their warm-up gig at Murphy’s town pub in Ipswich on the 27th October 2007.

Terrible band, terrible singer. Pity considering some of the talent involved.

Is good album artwork/packaging a factor in you deciding whether to buy a CD or just a download?
