THE TIVOLI THU OCT 18 After playing at QPAC the previous month, Kelly returns to Brisbane; this time, he’s joined by the acclaimed hokum blues artist C.W. Stoneking. His set is well received by tonight’s respectfully older crowd: it’s not hard to imagine Stoneking and his three-piece brass section emanating from a transistor radio half a century ago.
Paul Kelly and his band The Boon Companions have been touring together for years, and their performance tonight is nothing short of brilliant. Each an exceptional musicians in their own right, their combined four-part vocal harmonies behind Paul on songs like Deeper Water are exhilarating. Without hyperbole, material from Kelly’s latest album stands among his portfolio of classic rock tunes, of which there are many. Before Too Long, To Her Door and Dumb Things get a look-in; each song is delivered as earnestly as the last. Stolen Apples, the title track from his latest album, and first single God Told Me To are electrifying. The ability to consistently write great songs spanning a three decades-long career should never be understated. Kelly’s self-deprecating wit is evident throughout the set: looking around, the Tivoli is filled with irrepressible smiles. May Mr. Kelly continue to bring smiles to faces for many more years.
