THE GLOBE SAT OCT 20
The music tonight is great, but the case of rockstar-itis from Whisky Go Gos frontman Matt Hutchinson is better - the kind you won’t forget, ever. Tim Loydell and the Deckchairs thank the audience: “even those who turned up early by accident”. Break-up songster Loydell’s songs are filled with both elation and pain. The unpretentious, fast, emotive and mostly acoustic set has me likening these guys to a slightly less feminine Ani DiFranco.
The mood gets livelier when Sunshine Coast two-piece blues rockers Blackwater Fever play their short but charismatic set. The Globe lighting is always eccentric, and when a light shines out from under drummer Andrew Walter’s bottom, the crowd chuckles. Blackwater Fever are cool, and the gravelly vocals, intricate guitar work and boot tappin’ of Shane Hicks keep us enthused. When polished southern rockers Whisky Go Gos step up their image calls attention just as much as their music; dressed like swingers and biology teachers they play tunes from new album including heartwrenching fave Rodeo. When Red Dress ends singer Hutchinson gives the finger to the sound guy - then it gets crazy. He yells that there’s a man up back ruining the show. Launching into another (final) song the curtains close squashing the still playing band in it’s folds, and a bouncer drags Hutchinson off-stage. As quickly as it started it’s all over; the show’s shut down. ILI TULLOCH
