A British Melbourne band?

Change For You is the first single from Melbourne outfit Brilliant Fanzine, a rather subdued yet well-crafted contemporary rock song involving the engaging melancholic crooning of vocalist Scott Stevens. Somewhat reminiscent of Australian band The Church, acoustic guitars back Steven’s vocals while subtle bass lines move against a solid driving drumbeat. However, one should not forget the touches of piano and the samples that give this single a modern touch. The b-sides of this release however are quite dissimilar to the focal track. Although that is not to say that they are not as engaging as Change For You. Rather, they embrace the ‘90s with riffs that are reminiscent of Blur’s work on Parklife and vocal work that brings to mind fellow masters of brit-pop, Ride. This release signals major potential and should be listened to by those of us who believe Athlete are boring and that Damon Albarn has lost his mind.
