(Illusive)
Their ride is pimpin’ yo Adelaide aka ‘The Hood’ has spawned another hip hop band from its many ghettos. Unlike the Hilltop Hoods however, this record has a little less bogan and a little more soul. Nice! In fact, the soul element really creeps into the earlier tracks and dominates them. There’s less rapping here and more organs and handclaps, which can only be a good thing. It would be better if somebody shouted ‘Hallelujah!’ at the end of each track but I’ll get by without. A couple of sly instrumental interludes add a jazzy touch to the record. Fairytale really veers into R&B territory with smooth vocals and tinkly piano and continues this trend on Way You Feel. Inspire Me has a reggae vibe thanks to some airy guitar strums. The whole record actually has an effective genre-hopping quality to it, making Lowrider more comparable to a band like The Cat Empire. It’s better than their name suggests. MICHAEL PINCOTT
