(Ridiculous Records)
Jazz theories on the effects of city life Cocktail downing sophisticated wannabes should surely pay attention to this modern jazz-laden release from Brisbane’s own God’s Girlfriend. This is the perfect album suited for a drive through the inner city, in your polished car, while wearing over-sized sunglasses and sipping macchiato. However, the rest of us should give just as much, if not more consideration to this slickly chic album. For such an intimidating range of instruments and well-trained musicians this is a brilliantly cohesive and absorb-able release. Many different moods and atmospheres are explored and fully realized while the band fuses a definite jazz influence with excursions into other genres. The lyrics vocalist Kat Alberts sings so beautifully and affectively are just as well constructed as other facets presented. They are lyrics of a thoughtful artist going beyond standard topics, and instead exploring forms of the human condition and the ill effects found in the socialisation of modern city life.
