A fusion of hip hop, old school funk and reggae; Funknuckles release their first EP and single Da Man Da Funk At times I was having flash backs of Smoke Two Joints by Sublime, especially during the Pina Gunja track as the band seem to drop in and out of a stoned haze. After the smoke had cleared, I found myself bombarded with an entourage of brass instruments including Fab Gautier and Jimmy Kirk on trumpets and sax, Mark Alexander on drums and Dean Reeves on percussion. I could hardly resist bopping along as Zoltons Campbells’ and Dan Fihellys’ smooth vocals and solid bass line create a classic Caribbean sound. Trying something a little off centre, the Brissy boys may be hitting a target that has only skips in and out of the mainstream, but it’s a must for anyone who loves to funk. JONATHON HOWARD
