The Zoo Fri Nov 9 Take three bands beginning with ‘The’ who all know how to rock the fuck out, and you've instantly got a pretty great night. The Novocaines play an impressive early set, filled with killer Zeppelin-inspired lead guitar breaks and excellent stage presence. Judging by the heavy merch desk traffic, they've won a bunch of fans tonight.
Sydney duo The Fumes succeed at pinpointing cues for the audience to go apeshit: double-time drumming during the climax is a sure-fire winner. To first time listeners, Automobile must be absolutely mind-blowing. They've certainly mastered their explosive brand of blues-rock: as my friend puts it, "a two-piece shouldn't sound this good". Rock fans who haven't yet witnessed The Vasco Era live are doing themselves a serious disservice. By the time the Novocaines' singer returns to the stage to thump skins along to the finale, Honey Bee, the crowd is practically in raptures. Welcome to the Church of The Vasco Era, led by our charming priest, singer and guitarist Sid O'Neil. He possesses a wonderfully tortured, raw, and ultimately exhilarating voice that is among the strongest on the Australian rock scene. Since the Melbourne trio have released one of the best rock albums of the year and slay in the live environment, it seems that these guys have got a hell of a lot going for themselves. Get on board.
