Dense, languid folk

Byron Bay’s Ghost Mountain primarily draw on the power of their two vocalists, Christian Pyle and Sal Yates. The effectiveness of their combination brings a special quality to this EP, displaying the sort of chemistry and harmonic togetherness that I often hear in Low. Their combination works so well that when they sing individually you hope that the other person will chime in. The atmospheric, foggy lo-fi folk tracks are particularly strong, the simple but engaging Light Years and the melancholy Useless Bridge. Some Day Soon and Corners take a rockier approach and are reasonable but it isn’t their strong suite, sounding more like typical alt-country and drifting away from the subtlety and nuance that make the other tracks interesting. I Saw The Light Shine Gold finds a good balance between the two elements, but ultimately I’d like to hear Ghost Mountain fall further into the fog and mystery and further away from the light.
