(Hecho / Independent) First impressions last, but we’ll make an exception just this once Album opener One Of These Things kicks off with a ‘baby’s first Casio’ line and the woe-is-me lyric Ever get that feeling that you don’t belong? / Well I Do, 24/7. It would be more convincing if it wasn’t trying so hard. However, as next track In The City plays down the ‘80s synth card and replaces it with elegantly simplistic guitar and vocal harmonies, we find a much more satisfying result. The follow-up Love manages to combine the better parts of the first two tracks with multi-tracked singing and just the right sprinkling of cheesy synth grated over the top. Cheesy? Grated? Get it?!? Oh screw you, I’m funny. Seaside wraps up the EP with a floating guitar and vocals part that builds and builds into a euphoric drum-and-bass tune that name-checks anarchy, the United Nations and everything in between. Proof that track listings are still important in an iTunes-shuffled world. MITCH ALEXANDER
