Picks up where Pavement left off... Beautiful Forest is the third album from Perth indie rockers The Tigers... and it is awesome. But let us backtrack a little. The five-piece formed in Perth 10 years ago, most notably as a collaboration between guitarist and lyricist Chris Cobilis and trumpeter/keyboardist Ben Basell. The resulting debut Space Coyote, and 2002’s Christmas Album were highly competent – if not overly popular – records, full of substance and a clever reworking of pop sensibilities. Beautiful Forest follows on fairly sweetly from the sophomore effort of five years ago. Elongated structures hold their secrets to song’s end, while jazzy instrumentation adds touches of class to what is a very Australian sound of displacement and resignation. The arrangement is particularly precise: each instrument plays just enough to lurch the songs from section to section, starting, stopping and chiming-in in languid unison. This is Pavement, and so much more. JAKEB SMITH
