(Leaf/Rumraket)
Efterklang: it’s fun to say So they’ve got a snappy band name, but how is their music? Let’s find out by diving deep, deep into the Efterklang pool. This record is a rich little musical palace of sounds, ambience, warped strings, a simple guitar line, some watery beats, gorgeous layered vocals, and horns. Songs are similar in scale to a band like Sigur Ros but minus the post-rock elements. Vocals like mantras or chants provide a minimalist structure but really serve as just another sound, similar to A Silver Mt Zion. Strings are employed beautifully, wrapping the tracks in a light silk of sound, particularly effective in Horseback Tenors. Caravan takes all of these elements and places them into a more conventional format, the combination of drums, horns and strings give the track an epic feeling but it is kept contained by the male and female vocals. A gorgeous record that never lulls, highly recommended. MICHAEL PINCOTT
