Punk is not a ‘thing,’ Talons know this... Sydney’s Talons sound as though they’re from another generation of Australian punk. Present are some modern hallmarks, like a danceable rhythm section, jangle-y guitar lines and Australian-voiced, indie-style vocals. Yet the performances on the EP have a shambolic urgency lacking in so many modern-produced records. It’s like three music nerds from 2006 went back in time to hang with Tex Perkins and Spencer P Jones and discovered the central clause of the Australian underground sound. Yet it’s not a certain time period I’m hearing, it’s timelessness. I understand that there are a lot of bands making great underground records, and I wouldn’t even say Ducats is the best of them, but it is still a fantastic EP. It may not be new, but it is unlikely to get old, and at least it’s not Y&R. JAKEB SMITH
