Brisbane City Hall - Sun Dec 16 Organised by the Brisbane-based non-profit record label Starving Kids Records, Stuff The Stocking is a benefit gig in support of youth homeless initiatives. It is under this auspicious and noble banner that we meet in Brisbane City Hall for a day of good music and good causes. Falling Short perform riff-driven punchy pop-rock and display a high level of energy for a Sunday afternoon, not afraid of the occasional co-ordinated acrobatic moves. As much as I’d like to take shots at them, it actually looks kinda cool. Wait, who put Coheed & Cambria on the bill tonight? No, it’s the afroed figure of Vinnie, bassist from Dextor’s Conscience. Their catchy and bittersweet choruses and three-part harmonies evoke images of early Jimmy Eat World, while their hook-laden powerpop anthems are built for the masses. Escape Escape play with the same energy levels as if they were playing to a packed house, and the six-piece keep the skinny-jeaned crowd in the season’s spirit. The diminutive crowd of youth MySpacers return their dedication by showing they know the lyrics to every single song. I guess that’s how you spend Saturday night if you’re under 18 these days. My Dreams begins The Paper & The Plane’s set as a slow-burning epic that builds into a full-blown sensory assault, the perfect exposition for their musical prowess. The unassuming figure of vocalist Dan is responsible for numerous moments where a lump builds in the back of your throat and your hair stands up. But don’t take my tired clichés on their own, see them soon. After some warm and fuzzy words from today’s MC, Repeat Offender maintain the feel-good vibe with more hard-edged poppy punk music. Frontman Ryan Wilson struts his stuff, seeming more comfortable onstage than many of the gigs previous singers. The ladies love it, while somewhere out there Santa Claus is proud to be association with such a special event. The Easter Bunny is way jealous. MITCH ALEXANDER

There were so many adoring faces watching them from the floor and they performed some of their melodic and powerful new songs. They did such a great job in such a short set time. Very impressed |
