Bar Soma Thu Dec 13 As raging capitalists nibbled on tapas and discussed the market, they are treated to pretty ditties courtesy of a reduced Rooftop Nightwatch, tonight only as a duo. The equally delicate voices of Melissa Tickle and Pat Elliot bring punters and desk-slaves together, like American Psycho meets Chuck Taylor. The dominating madman/messiah baritone of Lucien Simon means we never gets too comfortable. Impromptu guest songs and stumbling through lyrics creates a ‘60s New York coffee house vibe, but with more drunken yelling.
Idle Cranes show little sign that tonight is the first time the band has been in the same room for a fortnight, as their thunderous walls of guitar succeed in unhinging the regular upturned collar crowd. And no, you can never have too much reverb in the vocals. After developing a mean case of the cranks due to audio issues, The Warm Guns power on regardless and deliver an unyielding set of girl-powered garage rock. Special mention to Mel for her disarming wail, somewhere between Karen O, Joplin and a slap in the face. In a style only befitting a jazz-infused freak out supergroup, Lost Of Love use the less-than-spectacular sound and alien surroundings to their advantage and obliterate a set of strung-out experimentation and good times. Not for everyone, but that’s half the fun, isn’t it? MITCH ALEXANDER
