Graceful soundscapes courtesy Comets On Fire’s Ben Chasny Two records I’ve reviewed this week showcase the wildly diverse nature of modern psychedelic rock. The new Acid Mothers Temple effort is noisy, cosmic jamming, while this latest effort by Ben Chasny, operating under the name Six Organs of Admittance, has a more restrained, melancholic approach. Here, Chasny takes the droning guitars and altered-reality soundscapes of psychedelia and blends them with desert-dry folk balladry. The result is a lovely, cinematic album, also including Chasny’s Comets On Fire bandmate Noel Harmonson on drums, with the likes of Matt Sweeney and The Fucking Champs’ Tim Green also popping by. Highlights include the swelling epics Coming To Get You and Final Wing, as well as tranquil closing track Goodnight. ***½ MATT THROWER
